This morning I'm traveling to the southern end of our district for my forum with Congresswoman Spanberger. In the five years I've served in the General Assembly, I've never seen Richmond look quite like this. It begs the question, what happened?

It's easy to blame the Democrats who have run Richmond for decades, but the truth is more complex than that. The city has gotten this way not because of who is in charge, but rather because of the ideology its leaders subscribe to: an ideology that requires an otherwise free people to be wholly dependent on the decree of politicians and their ideas.

As the economist Thomas Sowell once wrote, "what socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people—like themselves—need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat."

Everywhere this ideology has been applied, it has ended in the same sort of pictures as the ones you see here. We used to see this ideology applied in countries I deployed to while serving as a Green Beret. Now, we are beginning to see it applied here at home, in cities across our nation.

My opponent likes to say she "solves problems." And while her intentions might be good, she fails to see that every problem cannot be solved through government mandates, taxes, and regulations, all of which are ultimately imposed with the threat of violence. The shuttered businesses and boarded up Capitol building in downtown Richmond are tragic examples of what this sort of "problem-solving" ultimately leads to.

My mission in this forum and throughout this campaign is to show the American people that Virginia can once again be the beacon of freedom for our country and that we as Virginians can come together to find new and creative solutions to the problems we face. Will you come with me?
